Typhoon in the Philippines - Update
A Church Becomes a Relief CenterBoth Doane Baptist Church and Doane Baptist Bible Institute (DBBI) are on the opposite side of the river from the devastating flash flood that hit Iloilo city, Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Frank. Because they were spared the effects of the flood, the church became a relief center; and classes were cancelled at the Bible institute next door so students could provide manpower for clean up operations. Jerry Layton was also able to secure the help of several able-bodied volunteers from the Bible school to help clean up the flood ravaged house of their co-workers, Kent and Sandra Pool, who are on furlough. Howard Hardy, an ABWE missionary in Manila, also came to Iloilo to help. Not only was Howard an invaluable help in organizing the clean up at the Pools’, but he also became involved in relief distribution to other parts of the island.
It took an estimated 200 man hours to clear out the Pools’ house and store those things which could be saved. Fish were flopping around in the mud, some of the Pools’ clothes had claw marks made by rats trying to escape the flood, and the waters were infested with snakes.
People at the church cooked around the clock to provide warm meals for every flood victim who walked in the door, and dry clothes were donated. Churches from neighboring islands sent food and clothing, and one church even loaned their vehicle to help distribute relief supplies. Howard used ABWE emergency funds to facilitate the purchase of rice, candles, noodles, cans of sardines, and the church youth group placed gospel tracts in each bag as they filled them for distribution.
Howard also helped deliver rice, water, and sardines to Kalibo, on the north side of the island, and was able to bring back pictures and report the terrible devastation there, which had not been known. He said the situation is worse there than Iloilo. The needs are great! Please pray for the victims of the flood and those on the front lines as they reach out to the victims during this time. Please pray for spiritual fruit in the aftermath of this disaster.

Other Relief Efforts
With a string of natural disasters affecting numerous communities around the world, ABWE has been in contact with area churches and missionaries to assess how we can help. Many partners have already sent their gracious donations to help people affected in Burma, China, and Chile, and relief efforts are underway in each location. We are sensitive to the dangers of constantly appealing for funds, but we feel an obligation to demonstrate the compassion of Christ when and where, we have opportunity. As you review the following reports, please consider giving toward these efforts. More importantly pray that the gospel will do its work in hearts, as every offer of assistance is accompanied by a witness to the love of God in Christ.
